Classroom Discipline

Faculty members at Castle Dale Elementary each define, model, teach, practice, and reteach classroom procedures that enables the classroom to maintain a positive learning environment. Every faculty member has filed with the principal a Behavior Management plan outlining their classroom rules along with rewards and consequences.

Occasionally a teacher requests administrative support and intervention with their behavior management in the classroom. If a student is asked to visit with the principal concerning their conduct in the classroom, the parent will be notified of the event through a short essay that the student writes telling how they can learn to Respect People and Respect Property by building solutions to their problems.

Recess School

Intervention when Disruptive Playground Behavior Occurs:

Recess school is a program which helps students learn appropriate social and safety procedures that facilitate acceptable interaction and play during recess, lunch, before school, and after school. It is a behavior management program for unstructured times at school, not a classroom behavior management program. It provides a structured opportunity for students to learn and practice Castle Dale Elementary's Social and Safety Codes.

Students will be assigned to Recess School after they have received three white slips. A "white slip" is a small, simple form outlining when, what, and who repeatedly demonstrated inappropriate social and/or safety procedures. Any adult working in the school may write a white slip. The first white slip can serve as a warning for the student to evaluate their own behavior. Copies of all white slips written will be sent home to parents. If a student receives a third white slip during a quarter, he/she will be assigned to Recess School for 5 days. Recess School takes place during the entire lunch period. A student is expected to follow the instructions for each day of Recess School, or they will need to repeat the day until instructions are followed properly.

Day 1 Report o Recess School with lunch. No talking! Eat and sit quietly. Return tray to lunchroom at the end of the lunch period.
Day 2 Report to Recess School with lunch. Eat and complete a writing activity. Return tray to lunchroom at the end of the lunch period.
Day 3 Report to Recess School with lunch. Eat and complete an appropriate social skills lesson. Return tray to lunchroom at the end of the lunch period.
Day 4 Report to Recess School with lunch. Eat and role play social skills learned in Day 3. Return tray to lunchroom at the end of the lunch period.
Day 5 Report to Recess School with lunch. Eat and play indoor games with teacher and/or other Recess School students.

White slips will be forgiven every quarter of school, and students will begin the new quarter with a "clean slate." However, the second, third, etc., time a student earns placement in Recess School a requirement for completing the Recess School agenda is a school/parent conference. This conference is intended to help the school and home work together in meeting the needs of each individual student. The school will schedule the conference any one of the five days of Recess School that is convenient for parents, between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The conference with the parent will need to take place before the student is dismissed from Recess School.

Severe Clause: Students will automatically be placed in Recess School for any number of days by the principal at her discretion when the offense merits immediate social skills instruction. Being physically involved in a fight, bringing illegal substances onto the school grounds, or carrying a weapon may merit immediate placement in Recess School for a number of days to be determined by the principal as well as referral to the proper civil authorities if the offense merits such action..
